Finally….an aran for me!
Friday, September 29th, 2006Another posting about a past project - mainly because I am too ashamed to post about my lack of progress on current projects!!! I keep getting distracted my new wool, or spotting wool in my stash that suddenly looks really appealing.
Am working like mad to complete the baby shawl for my friends as the baby will be arriving in a couple of weeks. It’s rather depressing as it seems so slow to progress and so I spend a whole evening knitting and don’t feel as though I have got anywhere. So far I’ve completed 11 repeats of the 16 row pattern and I reckon I need to do about 20 for the 120cm length.
it’s 2ply wool on 3.75mm needles with 240 stitches so it takes me about 7/8 minutes to knit one row (I timed it last night) so at that rate with 9 more repeats of 16 rows to do I have about another 19 hours of work to do….then I have to knit a border to go around the whole thing and sew it on…..I’m going to be pushing it - let’s hope the baby is late!
I also completed my second Yediburunlar sock - I’ll add a photo here later - and I really love them. I am resisting starting another sock until the shawl is complete along with some of my other WIP. As the weather is starting to get colder here now I must pick up some of my winter sweater WIP’s and get them finished.
Meanwhile, here is a completed project from a year ago -

Having knit aran jumpers for almost my entire family I decided to take time last winter to knit one for me. However I decided to go for a poncho, which was a bit of a fashion item last winter anyway and I’d always fancied one.
The poncho was knit as a big rectangle with neck shaping in one side and a roll neck knitted up before folding and sewing along one shoulder edge. The whole thing was finished off with tassles.

1. Grab the nearest book. Open the book to page 123. Find the fifth sentence.Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
“Miss Marcy shot her a quick glance and Topaz gave her the very faintest nod. I nearly laughed - they were so different, Miss Marcy like a rosy little bird and Topaz tall and pale, like a slightly dead goddess, but just that second they resembled each other in their absolute lust to marry Rose off.
‘Perhaps we could offer Miss Marcy something of Aunt Millicent’s as a small return I suggested.”
This is from I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith which was the last book I read for my book discussion group. It was a fantastic book and anyone who only knows Dodie Smith for 101 Dalmations would be surprised to find she wrote a wonderful novel.
2.stretch your left arm out as far as you can…what do you touch first?
The copy of I Capture the Castle that I just put down on the sofa next to me.
3. what was the last thing you watched on tv?
I am watching Breakfast News on the BBC as I write this, always watch it before I head off to work in the morning.
Sockret Pal Questionnaire
Monday, September 25th, 2006
In anticipation of receiving my sockret pal I’ve created a new page to show my Sock-ret Pal Questionnaire, see the link on the left.
I’m really excited about this as it’s my first swap of any kind and I’ve only just discovered sock knitting…..looking forward to getting to know my “Pal”
Rowan summer Tweed - “Coral”
Sunday, September 24th, 2006This is a gorgeous summer top I made last year and have worn loads - it’s great with jeans for a casual look or with a skirt and heels really dressed up.

The wool is Rowan Summer Tweed in a lilac colour (poss Vanity?) and this top used 3 skeins..as I had 5 skeins I still have 2 which I have not found anything to do with. The yarn was not easy to knit as the knobbly texture meant it did not slip across itself or the needles very easily but when knitted up the texture of the fabric is lovely.
Knitting at Yediburunlar
Tuesday, September 19th, 2006Have been away for a wonderfully relaxing week at the Yediburunlar Lighthouse near Fethiye in Turkey. It’s a little boutique hotel with only 6 rooms which is, quite literally, in the middle of nowhere which means there is very little to do except relax.

Yet another Aran..this one for my Hubby
Friday, September 1st, 2006Yes - it’s another aran jumper! I love knitting these things and just can’t stop I’m afraid, if I see aran wool I have to buy it. This wool was bought specifically to knit an aran for my hubby. I knit him at least one warm wooly every winter as he cycles to work every day and I like to make sure he’s nice and warm. He’s about 6′4″ and has very long arms so buying jumpers to fit is always a problem.

The pattern on this one was quite simple and the jumper shape was also simple - no shaped armholes - the back and front were knit with straight edges and then just simple shaping for the shoulders and neck.
The wool itself was what I fell in love with, it’s quite a lightweight aran with (I think) about 10% manmade fiber but it was the colour that drew me - it’s a denim blue with lovely changes of dark and light which looks different as it moves and as the light falls on it.
I picked only two aran stitches - a simple moss stitch which symbolises abundance and growth and a cross over chevron. The chevron is a variation of cable filled in with moss stitch.
He wears this continually and it’s the reason I had to knit an aran for his father…and having done that my m-i-l then complained she didn’t have one so I had to knit her one last Christmas!
